What is the goal of a burst test?
The aim of a burst test in the area of medical product testing is to determine the maximum pressure load at which a packaging (sterile barrier) fails under internal pressure. The pressure is gradually increased until the packaging bursts to evaluate the sealing force.
The purpose of the test is to ensure that the packaging opens at the seal seam and that the material does not break. The burst pressure can be used as a parameter for further tests, such as an in-process inspection.

What happens during a burst test?
A burst test is a test in which the internal pressure of a package is increased to determine at what pressure it bursts and whether the failure point is at the sealing seam or whether the material breaks.
The ability of a package to withstand increased internal pressure can be examined. This strength test can be used to evaluate the entire seal seam area and thus identify the weakest area.
In which area are burst tests used?
The burst test on a packaging, in particular sterile barrier systems, is used as part of packaging validation in accordance with DIN EN ISO 11607-1 or as an in-process control in packaging production.
Standards: ASTM F1140/F1140M, DIN EN ISO 11607-1, DIN EN ISO 11607-2
