What is the purpose of temperature and climate testing as part of environmental simulation?

The goals of such testing are to prevent material damage, malfunctions, and premature ageing in products that will be exposed to changing environmental conditions during subsequent use.
The focus is on the product itself, not the transport packaging: Can it withstand extreme heat and cold, humidity fluctuations and the associated stresses? For instance, we assess the reliability and quality of electronic and mechanical components and materials under realistic usage conditions.

What happens during a temperature and climate test in environmental simulation?

Test specimens are exposed to heat, cold and humidity in special chambers to simulate real operating conditions. Different temperature cycles and humidity levels are applied to evaluate the behaviour of materials and functions.

The following questions are at the forefront:

  • Do the mechanical or electronic components remain functional?
  • Is there corrosion, deformation or material fatigue?
  • Is the service life extended or shortened?

The findings are incorporated directly into optimisation steps in the development process or used for product conformity assessment.

In which areas are temperature and climate tests used?

These tests are used in all industries where products need to be durable and reliable in real environmental conditions.

Examples:

  • Electronics: smartphones, printed circuit boards, high-frequency technology
  • Automotive: engines, battery cells, vehicle sensor technology
  • Aerospace: satellite technology and engine components
  • Medical technology: devices and implants with high safety and durability requirements
