What does IP67 mean for you?
IP stands for Ingress Protection - protection against the ingress of foreign matter. The numbers indicate the degree of protection:
6 - Dust-tight: Complete protection against dust. The case is completely dustproof so that no dust can enter, even under pressure.
7 - Submersion protection: Protection against temporary submersion in water. The unit can be immersed in water to a depth of up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes without water ingress or malfunction.
In which areas is an IP protection class and leakage test used?
The IP protection class test is used in a variety of areas and products. For example:
- Eletronics: smartphones, control cabinets, cameras
- Automotives: control systems, sensors, electronic components
- Medical technology: devices, pumps
- Aerospace: satellites, sensors
- Energy technology: switchgear, gearboxes, control systems
- Telecommunications: junction boxes, outdoor devices
The test samples for IP protection type tests can vary in size, from tiny components to large devices. However, there are special requirements for automotive applications with regard to dirty water and splash water. Here, regulations and standards apply that go beyond the usual IP tests.

How we test your product for IP67:
A device only receives IP67 certification if it passes two demanding tests:
Dust test: The case is exposed to fine dust in a test chamber. At IP67, absolutely nothing can penetrate.
Water test: The unit is immersed in 1 metre of water for 30 minutes. It remains fully functional after the test.
