What is the purpose of a needle flame test?

The needle flame test is used to test the fire behaviour of materials and components. The aim is to determine how easily a material catches fire, how long it burns and whether it is potentially self-extinguishing. These tests are essential for safety assessment and help to minimise risk in various industries.

What happens during a needle flame test?

In a needle flame test, the test object is exposed to a 12 mm high flame under controlled conditions. The test procedure varies depending on the severity, but always includes an ignition time: How quickly does the material ignite?

Burning behaviour: How does the flame spread? Do burning parts drip?

Self-extinguishing: Does the flame go out on its own?

Where is needle flame testing used?

Needle flame testing is used in many industries, including

Automotive: Testing vehicle interiors to meet fire safety standards.

Aerospace: Ensuring the fire resistance of materials used in aircraft.

Electronics: Testing enclosures and components for fire resistance.

Construction industry: Assessing the fire performance of building materials.

Textiles & Furniture: Testing of upholstered furniture, carpets and protective clothing.

These tests ensure that products and materials comply with legal and safety requirements.

Standards: DIN EN 60695-11-5
